How turbine flowmeters work

Measuring Principle
Installation Tips

Turbine flowmeters measure liquid velocity using a rotor installed directly in the flow path. As the liquid passes through the meter, it drives the angled turbine blades and causes the rotor to rotate. Under stable operating conditions, the rotor speed is proportional to the liquid flow rate. A magnetic pickup detects each blade as it passes and generates a pulse-frequency signal corresponding to the rotor speed.

The relationship between pulse frequency and flow rate is defined by the meter’s calibrated K-factor, which represents the number of pulses generated per unit volume. The transmitter processes this frequency signal and converts it into instantaneous flow rate and totalized volume for local display or transmission to a PLC, controller or monitoring system.

Install the turbine flowmeter on a fully filled pipe with the flow direction matching the arrow on the meter body. For vertical installation, the liquid should flow upward to help keep the measuring section completely filled and minimize the influence of entrained air. Provide at least 10D of straight pipe upstream and 5D downstream, or follow the specific requirements stated in the product manual.

Avoid installing the meter immediately after pumps, elbows, valves or other sources of flow disturbance. Keep the pipeline clean and prevent particles, fibers or air bubbles from entering the measuring section. Where impurities are present, install a suitable upstream filter; if free gas may be present in the liquid, a degassing device should be considered.

Frequently Asked Questions

What liquids can Supmea turbine flowmeters measure?

They are designed for clean, low-viscosity liquids such as water, cooling water, glycol, lubricating oil, edible oil, fuel and compatible chemicals.

Articles and high viscosity may affect the rotor and accuracy. For liquids above the specified viscosity, application-specific calibration may be required.

Supmea turbine flowmeters cover DN4 to DN200. The available range depends on the connection type and selected model.

LWGY models offer 0.5%R or 1.0%R accuracy. The FLM200 provides ±1.5% flow accuracy and ±1°C temperature accuracy.

Choose threaded models for compact, small-pipe installations. Choose flanged models for broader pipe sizes and robust industrial connections.

Depending on the model, options include pulse, 4–20 mA, RS485, Modbus RTU and HART.
