How TSS meters work

TSS sensors measure suspended solids concentration by detecting the interaction between infrared light and suspended particles in water. The sensor emits infrared light into the sample, where suspended particles absorb and scatter part of the light. An optical receiver detects the intensity of the scattered light, which changes with particle concentration. The electronics analyze this response and convert it into a TSS or sludge concentration value.

Supmea sensors use infrared absorption and scattered-light technology based on the ISO 7027 method, helping reduce the influence of sample color. Some models also use optimized optical paths, real-time compensation and optional self-cleaning brushes to support stable online measurement. Regular cleaning and calibration help maintain accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is TSS?

TSS (Total Suspended Solids) refers to the concentration of suspended solid particles in water.

Turbidity measures water clarity based on light scattering, while TSS measures the concentration of suspended solids.

A TSS sensor uses infrared optical measurement technology to detect light changes caused by suspended particles.

Yes. TSS sensors are widely used for sludge concentration and MLSS monitoring in wastewater treatment.

TSS measurement is commonly used in wastewater treatment, sludge process control, environmental monitoring and industrial water systems.

The controller supports common industrial outputs including 4-20mA and RS485 Modbus communication.
