How differential pressure transmitter work

A differential pressure transmitter measures the pressure difference between a high-pressure side and a low-pressure side. The two process pressures act on isolating diaphragms and are transferred through fill fluid to the sensing element. In SUPMEA transmitters such as the SUP-2051, a monocrystalline silicon sensor detects the differential pressure and converts it into an electrical signal. The electronics condition the signal and provide a proportional 4–20 mA output, with HART on selected models.

Differential pressure can be used directly to monitor pressure drop across filters or equipment, or combined with a primary flow element to calculate flow rate. With the correct installation arrangement and fluid density data, it can also be used for liquid-level measurement in process vessels.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a differential pressure transmitter measure?

A differential pressure transmitter measures the difference between two process pressures and converts the result into a standard electrical output signal.

Yes. When installed across a primary flow element such as an orifice plate, the measured differential pressure can be used to calculate flow rate.

Yes. Differential pressure transmitters can measure hydrostatic liquid level while compensating for the pressure above the liquid in a sealed vessel.

Depending on the model, available outputs include two-wire 4–20 mA, HART communication and optional RS485/Modbus.

Available materials depend on the model and configuration and may include stainless steel 316L, Hastelloy C, tantalum and selected coated diaphragm materials.

SUP-2051 and SUP-2051DP can be applied to steam measurement when the transmitter, impulse piping or remote-seal arrangement is selected and installed for the process temperature.
