How vortex flowmeters work

Measuring Principle
Installation Tips

Vortex flowmeters operate according to the **von Kármán vortex shedding principle**.  As steam, gas or liquid flows around this obstruction at a sufficient velocity, the fluid separates alternately from both sides of the bluff body, creating a repeating pattern of vortices downstream known as a **Kármán vortex street**.

As these vortices are shed alternately from each side of the bluff body, they generate corresponding high- and low-pressure fluctuations in the flowing medium. A sensing element detects these periodic pressure or force variations and converts them into an electrical signal that can be processed by the transmitter.

For steam and gas applications, vortex flowmeters can also be combined with temperature and pressure measurement or compensation. With the corresponding density information, the system can calculate compensated or mass flow, depending on the meter configuration.

Install the vortex flowmeter where pipeline vibration and flow disturbance are minimized. Avoid locations close to strong vibration sources or high-power electrical equipment. If pipeline vibration cannot be avoided, provide adequate pipe supports and, where necessary, use vibration-damping measures to improve measurement stability.

Provide the upstream and downstream straight pipe lengths specified in the product manual, and keep valves, elbows, reducers and other flow disturbances away from the meter inlet. The flowmeter should be installed concentrically with the pipeline, without mechanical stress, and flange gaskets must not protrude into the flow path.

Ensure reliable grounding, leave sufficient space for wiring and maintenance, and open control valves gradually during startup to avoid sudden pressure or flow shocks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a vortex flowmeter measure mass flow?

A standard model measures volume flow. A compensated model can calculate mass flow using temperature, pressure and density data.

The SUP-LUGB-C anti-vibration model is designed for applications where pipeline vibration may affect measurement stability.

Supmea vortex flowmeters cover DN8 to DN500, depending on the selected model and installation type.

They are commonly used for steam, gases and suitable low-viscosity liquids in industrial pipelines.

A bluff body generates alternating vortices. Their frequency is proportional to fluid velocity and is converted into flow rate.

It is recommended for steam and gas when changing temperature or pressure causes significant density variation.
